Martin Pre-owned 0018-1926 e/HSC
Martin 00-18 Flat Top Acoustic Guitar - 1926,
S/N - 27640
Made by Martin in Nazareth, PA, it is constructed of Adirondack spruce top, Honduras mahogany back, sides and neck, with ebony fingerboard and bridge, and rosewood top binding. The guitar has a lacquer finish. The 12-fret, steel string Martins of the middle to late 1920s were some of the finest guitars of the era. Soon after, Martin altered their designs to the 14-fret neck OM "Orchestra Model". Martin built a relatively small number of these traditional long-body scallop-braced flat-tops, braced for steel strings instead of the traditional gut strings. These guitars maintained the slotted headstock, wide ebony fingerboard and 12 fret neck joint. The other features of the guitar remained pretty much the same since the 1800’s.
The instrument is in excellent playing condition with no signs of fret wear and a low playable action. The finish shows signs of use, however there appear to be no exposed wood, though the pick wear near the bridge is close. Other than signs of wear and tear, the only signs of repair are a hairline crack in the back on the treble side and the center joint, approximately 4’ each. There is also evidence of professional repair regluing the back to the treble side in this area to the treble side of the end pin. Having owned this guitar for well over 40 years, these repairs appear to have been done back in the ‘30s and have survived the test of time. The brass tuners are original and functional as are the bar frets which show no signs of wear. The nut and bridge are also original with a new saddle, faithfully replicating the original with the addition of being compensated. The Guardian brand hard shell is new and designed for 00 and OM guitars.
The sound is full and pleasing and surprising due to its diminutive size. This guitar will perform well both fingerstyle as well as flatpicking with jazz band.
